My Life as a Medical Doctor, Author, Medical Writer, Editor, Humanitarian Worker and Researcher

I was born in London, England, United Kingdom, a vibrant and cosmopolitan City.  The City of London offers diversity in culture, architecture, history and monarchy!

My father often reads to me as a baby.  From then, I developed love for books and I often got the “aunties” at my Pre-School/Nursery School to read volumes of books to me at pre-school centres. 

My inspiration for writing came from my mother, who is a brilliant medical doctor and a great scientist, and a prolific writer in her own right.  She is the Editor-in-Chief of various International Medical Journals.  I admired her work ethic, her tenacity, her ability to focus on everything she does, and her dedication to her work despite all challenges she had.  She often wakes up very early in the mornings to do her writings and she does not stop until she completes the work. My Mum and Dad work and publish together as co-authors in certain areas of medical and healthcare issues.

My Dad has enormous energy for work. When we have gone to bed my Dad continued working in his study finishing about 2 AM in the mornings sometimes.  I learned these important skills from them.  I carried this early learning to my Primary School, where my performance puts me in the gifted and talented group.  Due to my good progress, I was put on the Writers' Guild Group at School where we wrote various stories.

My love for reading helped me to gain various recognitions, winning many prizes and certificates as a commendable reader and writer from a very young age at schools, and now at higher education institutions and as a medical and healthcare professional.

When my grandfather, Zephaniah was visiting our family in England, he told me various interesting stories, which also included when he was a young soldier in the Second World War, fighting for the British people. He particularly liked the events involving King George VI and when they used to sing the British National Anthem of “God Save the King!"  He loved watching Royal ceremonies and the various pageantries, which also got me interested in the story about Royals.

As my mother is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Medicine (IJM), which is an official journal for the Association of Health Care Professionals (AHCP), and the International Association of Health Care Professionals (IAHCP) Society, my parents have always taken me to the different International Medical and Scientific Conferences of the AHCP/IAHCP Society since I was a baby.  In these meetings I have the privilege of meeting the delegates in the conferences from all over the world and observing the presentations of the numerous research areas.  I got fascinated by the scientific processes, and I developed interests in medicine, medical sciences, and healthcare topics. 

My schools entered me into various writing contests and I was encouraged to try and write professionally.  I have always enjoyed listening to people's reading from infancy, and since 2006, I have tried to write my own stories.  In addition, in my primary school, I was put in the gifted and talented writing guilds group, which developed my interest in writing.  Publishers considered my ongoing projects, and subsequently reviewed, and accepted my first four books for publication from 2011 to 2013.   After these initial successes, I am able to spend more time at my desk writing more books and undertaking further projects.

For the subsequent editions of the books, I spent some time during my summer holidays updating the books.  At the moment, I am working on the latest editions of the books, which are due to be released in the course of 2026.

I am also working on more medical and scientific topics for my next set of books, and some medical, surgical, infectious diseases, neurosurgical matters, public health, epidemiological, and general healthcare books, which are scheduled to be published in the course of 2026 and 2027.

I am currently a Medical Doctor, Author, Senior Medical Writer and Researcher.  I graduated from Medical University- Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe with Master’s Degree in Medicine-MD(Distinction) with First Class Honors/Excellent Degree, and as “Summa Cum Laude/Valedictorian”, and as the Best Graduating Medical Doctor of the Class of 2022.    I am also undertaking higher research studies – at the equivalent of doctoral degree level in medicine, epidemiology, public health, neurosciences, neurological diseases, neurological surgery,  haematological diseases, including other surgical issues.

My research involves effects of food on health, neurosurgery, neurosciences, neurology, congenital anomalies, forensic medicine, healthcare matters, the impact of chronic diseases in the community, co-morbidity matters, haematology, epidemiology and public health issues, surgical diseases, infectious diseases/tuberculosis, dermatology, urology, nutrition/food insecurity, child health, and applied sciences in healthcare.

Dr Maria Jana’s professional interests look at various issues in neurosurgery, paediatric issues in surgical practices, co-morbidities in common diseases found in the community like cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, diabetes and respiratory diseases, surgical treatments of different diseases, both in adult and paediatric populations, epidemiology, urology, orthopaedics, neurosciences/neurology, dermatology, autoimmune diseases and unusual encounters of tuberculosis in various organs and systems.

My specialist interests include: Heamatology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neurosciences, Surgery, General Medical Matters, Surgery, Haematology, Public Health, Global Health Issues, Infectious Diseases, Paediatrics, Nutrition/Food Insecurity, Pathology/Forensic Medicine, Medical Rehabilitation, Medical Emergencies, Disaster Medicine, Epidemiology, innovations in Medicine, Evidence-based Medicine, Medical Education, Medical Informatics, History of Medicine, History of Surgery, English Literature and various languages.

 As I have knowledge and skills in various branches of medicine and surgery, including public health, global health, humanitarian matters, community development etc., she has a very a long publications list as stated above, dealing with all areas in medicine, surgery and healthcare issues. As a result, she is I have a long publication list of over 200 materials. Thus, I am the first author of over 150 peer reviewed papers and articles in various medical and scientific journals, including numerous peer reviewed book chapters. To this end, 39 of my research papers are currently indexed in SCOPUS and over 90 of my research articles and papers are indexed in other online databases. I have also authored and co-authored over 15 books chapters and reports, and 21 educational books/guides for my undergraduate and postgraduate teaching roles, which can also be found at the British Library( Legal Deposit Section) and other national and international libraries via their Legal Deposit for publications.

I have participated in over 40 Scientific International Medical Conferences, where I have given over 50 presentations and facilitated/taught over 12 educational, medical/clinical and research workshops and interactive sessions to the multiprofessional healthcare workers and medical/healthcare students. I am a member of various professional bodies including the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Associate Membership, British Society of Haematology (BSH), Bulgarian Medical Society of Haematology (BMSH), Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland Affiliate Membership and other professional bodies.

I have won many sponsorships, scholarships, awards and honours.  Some of them are as follows:

Awards in the Medical University – Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe:

•  I was named the winner of the best Bulgarian Language Handwriting in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe in May 2017 during an Awards Ceremony. 

• I was the winner of the Rector’s prize and award for excellent student in 2018 in the Medical University, as she achieved the best excellent marks in all subjects in medicine.  She received a scholarship payment as a result of this award. 

• I was the winner of the Rector’s prize and award for excellent student in 2019 in the Medical University, as she achieved the best excellent marks in all subjects in medicine.  She received a scholarship payment as a result of this award. 

• I was the winner of the Rector’s prize and award for excellent student in 2020 in the Medical University, as she achieved overall excellent mark for all subjects in medicine.  She received a scholarship payment as a result of this award.  

• I was the winner of the Rector’s prize and award for excellent student in 2021 in the Medical University, as she achieved overall excellent mark for all subjects in medicine.  She received a scholarship payment as a result of this award.  

• I was the winner of the inaugural – debutante Prestigious Award of “Student of the Year Award” in December 2021 at the Medical University – Plovdiv, Bulgaria.  

• I was the Best Graduating Medical Doctor in the Class of 2022 – graduating with Excellent/Distinction Grade (First Class Honours Degree) as “Summa Cum Laude/Valedictorian” in the Master’s Degree in Medicine/Master Physician Professional Qualification.

I have always championed the roles of science, technology and innovation(STI), which I have been bringing in in my community development efforts, humanitarian work and good will ambassadorial work for different organisations and groups. These endeavours align well with the United Nations(UN )2030 Agenda, the SDGs and the STI.

My life as a doctor, author, medical writer, and healthcare professional and a humanitarian worker is very rewarding and enjoyable indeed!
