Educational Seminar Book on Autoimmune Diseases by Maria Jana Kingsley-Godwin
The immune system protects the body from disease and infection by attacking microbes that get into the body, such as viruses and a person has an autoimmune disease, his/her immune system attacks the healthy cells of their organs and tissues by mistake. There are more than 80 different autoimmune diseases. Frequently their symptoms overlap, making them hard to diagnose. Autoimmune diseases are more common in women, and they often run in families. Blood tests that look for autoantibodies can help doctors diagnose these conditions. Treatments include medications to calm the overactive immune response and bring down inflammation in the body. The purpose of this educational seminar/workshop teaching book is to explore the meaning, aetiology, diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, prognosis, and healthcare issues in autoimmune diseases in order to provide more knowledge to healthcare professionals on how to deal the challenges posed by autoimmune diseases in society with the aid of case studies.
